David Waldren is an award-winning cake designer with a passion for pushing the boundaries of all things cake.

David’s interest in cake was sparked as a young boy inspired by creative birthday cakes made for him by his mother. Years later and halfway through an architecture degree, he realised this was where his true passion had lain all along. Unenthused by his studies at Brighton University, David’s newfound technical design skills began to lend themselves to the dream of owning his own cake business instead.

After completing his architecture degree in 2016, David threw his all into his new goal, and went on to complete a PME Masters Certificate in Cake Decorating. Over the next 18 months, he worked in the industry, honed his skills and practised like mad. He also needed to gain the business skills needed to go out on his own – as a true artist, he knew it was all or nothing!

In 2017, the dream became a reality. David secured premises for his new cake shop, aptly christened The Cake Architect. Formerly his nickname from university days, ‘The Cake Architect’ embodies the precision and flair of an architect, with a nod to the incredible strength it takes to reset a career path in a new direction. As a result of his past, David approaches each cake with a technical eye and unparalleled creative vision.

Since opening the shop, David hasn’t looked back. He takes pride in getting to know his clients, and often figures out exactly the cake they are looking for before they do! His friendly, personable attitude makes him easy to talk to, and he loves making the cake designing process as personal and fun as possible. He is known for his adventurous spirit, and for attempting feats that others wouldn’t dare. His favourite creations include larger-than-life sculpted cakes, and cakes including elements like sound, motion or light.

David continues to learn and grow at every step of his cake journey, and has visions for all kinds of crazy cake-related ambitions in the years to come.
